12 Apr How we aim to pinpoint the top stocks fighting global warming
When world leaders descend on an as-yet-unspecified location to attend the UN Climate Change Conference in 2050, will they bring along confetti to celebrate their success, or will they hang their heads in defeat as they renew yet another tired series of unmet pledges?
To claim victory, these men and women will have to have held back the increase in the world’s temperature over the next nearly three decades to 2C against pre-industrial levels – or, for a total triumph, just 1.5C. Each fraction of a degree marks the difference between floods being manageable or a city being too hot to inhabit.
Crucially, however, it is not just governments and world leaders that are on the hook in this endeavour. Businesses – and their institutional investor owners – have in many cases taken up arms as well. They too will be able to claim some of the credit for having headed off calamity before it’s too late – if, indeed, credit is due when the time comes.
